Children and young people advisory group
The Department established a Children and Young People Advisory Group (CYPAG) in late 2023 to provide a structured way for young Tasmanians to support its Child Safety and Wellbeing Framework.
The Group is made up of young Tasmanians aged 12 to 18 years, with secretariat support provided by the Child Safety and Wellbeing Service.

Listed below are the Department’s inaugural CYPAG members. We thank them for sharing information about who they are and why they joined CYPAG.
I’m 17 years old and live in Northern Tasmania. Reason for joining CYPAG: I have a passion for Health and aspire to be a doctor to inspire and help people.
I’m 16 years old and in Year 10 and live in Northern Tasmania. I live with my Mum, Dad, cat and dog. I love music and photography. The reason why I wanted to join CYPAG, is to contribute to improving the safety and accessibility of health services for all young people. I’m also looking forward to hearing other young people’s views and ideas, and working together to improve health care for young people.
I’m aged 15 years and live in Northern Tasmania… [I joined] the CYPAG because I believe it is an experience that will help me in future, it will help me gain life experience, make friends, and make a difference in the care system.
I’m aged 15 and live in Northern Tasmania. I compete in public speaking and Model UN debating. I’m also an avid Eurovision fan, and play five instruments. I joined CYPAG because I want to make sure that young Tasmanian voices are being heard when we raise concerns about our healthcare system. As someone with experience of various health conditions, I know firsthand how flawed the system can be, and wish to work alongside others to make lasting and real impact in this space.
I’m aged 12 and live in the North West of Tasmania.… [I’m joining CYPAG because] I like helping people and … [I think] we need more doctors that are skilled in helping younger people.
I'm 16 and live in the North West of Tasmania with my parents and two brothers. I enjoy spending time with friends and family. I am deeply passionate about the well-being of young people, which has been a driving force throughout my personal and professional journey. My dedication to this cause is rooted in my belief that every young person deserves a secure and nurturing environment to thrive in. Joining an advisory group for the safety and well-being of young people would allow me to channel this passion into meaningful action, contributing to the betterment of our future generations.
I’m aged 13 and live in Southern Tasmania. I would like to join the CYPAG because I would like to help in improving the healthcare system of our state, from the point of view of a young person who has been through the health department for a variety of reasons. I believe this opportunity is a unique experience to gain knowledge about the healthcare and medical fields and how they operate. I am considering going into the medical field when I am older, and I think this experience would help me achieve a better understanding of what is involved with working in the healthcare sector.
Considering CYPAG’s ideas
CYPAG welcomes enquiries from Health work areas interested in exploring how their ideas might be actioned to strengthen their services to children and young people.
They are also keen to hear from work areas already doing work which aligns to their feedback – so that it can be celebrated and shared with other services.

Recent feedback from CYPAG
CYPAG meets a couple of times a year. Topics of discussion include CYPAG members’ areas of interest, as well as Department of Health consultation to support key projects.
CYPAG members feedback is generally shared with all Health staff, alongside key Health leaders, to support all work areas consider how they may strengthen services to children and young people.
